Abstract
This article discusses about the process of hadith codification from Prophet Muhammad era until Khalifah Umar ibn Abdul Aziz in Umayya period. According to the experts, the history of codifying hadith of the Prophet and its systems has different arguments. There are scholars (historians) stating that the initial phase of writing the hadiths was prohibited and the companions were directed to focus on writing the Quran for the reasons that hadith has already been noted. Others state that the writing of a new tradition began during companions. Some say that writing began on the second century of Hijrah. This study tried to uncover the writing traditions that seem tortuous until the second century. Starting from the contradictions of recording hadith during prophets and companions, tabi’in period, to these systematic codified hadiths and booked in chapters uniformly to bring some methodology in the collection. At the end of the discussion, it was found a number of systematic writing traditions ranging, from the banning of hadith writing at the time of the Prophet until it was codified neatly now.
