"«¿Somos nosotros testigos de uno de los más complejos y decisivos períodos de la historia humana? ¿Es éste el periodo final de una época, o un comienzo?» Con estas palabras, que traen a la memoria la expresión con la que San Agustín veía en la caída del Imperio Romano por obra de los bárbaros el inicio de una nueva época de la humanidad, Juan Pablo II abrió el 17 de agosto de 1998, en el Palacio Pontificio de Castel Gandolfo, el Coloquio Internacional promovido por el «Instituto para las Ciencias Humanas» de Viena, sobre el tema «At the End of the Millennium: Time and Modernities»" [""Are we witnessed one of the most complex and critical periods of human history?
