Abstract
From the Middle Ages to modern times, in the European Catholic Church, Bible reading was limited to the clergy. Jean Basset, a missionary who came to China in the 17th century, proposed to translate the Bible into the local language to enlighten the Chinese people. Because of the rise of modernism and the anxiety generated by it, some Church encyclicals published before the Second Vatican Council expressed some reservations regarding the historical-critical method of modern hermeneutics, but still adopted many of the method’s principles. These principles supplied the theological foundation of the Lumen Gentium articulated by the Second Vatican Council. Therefore, Council’s views on the Bible, Holy Tradition and Church Magisterium are not an interruption of Catholic tradition but a continuation and renewal of the tradition.
