Abstract
The phenomenon of Indonesian politics could not complete if it’s not studied in the perspective of political ethos. Indonesia often regarded as partof the eastwhich is gentleness, helpful-person, but in the other hand some research about the personality ethos of Indonesian that is predicted by Mochtar Lubis in 1977 described Indonesia as a nation of: 1. the hypocritical, 2. disinclined and irresponsible for the actions, decision, though, and etc, 3. the spirit of feudalism that embodied in the behavior of feudalism, 4) believe in superstition, artistic, and 5) weak in character. The version of Mochtar Lubis about the basic characteristics of Indonesian still need to be studied and even debatable, because people can change anytime. Psychologist, Sarlito Wirawan Sarwono mention some of the characteristics was more appropriate as “personality profile”, meanwhile in anthropology, the characteristics can be called as an “ethos” or “special trait” from a community as a study of Ruth Benedict (1962) about ethos in a book entitled Pattern of Culture. This study is trying to analyze the thinking of Mochtar Lubis in 1977 which at some part still show about the similarity and be related to how Indonesian people based on anthropologist Koentjaraningrat. The study concern with these two Indonesian writers (a senior journalist and an anthropologist). It will make a typology about how politic ethos of Indonesian people. Thus, several of politic phenomenons such as “kutu loncat” from one party to another party, money corruption simultaneously, inconsistent in saying and action (during the campaign and has won the election) will be understandable. The next is, our knowledge about this politic ethos will be useful at least in two things: (1) academic and, (2) practical. Academically, this study is expected can be a reference and an interesting study in the field of sociology politic, anthropology of politic or psychology of politic and practically this study is also useful for the policy makers in both of government or a political party
