Abstract
"Los códigos reflejan la estructura de la casa-empresa greco-romana manifestada en pares asimétricos de relación entre una figura dominante y otra persona o personas subordinadas: esposo/esposa, padre/hijos, amo/esclavos. Analizamos la retórica empleada en los códigos dirigidos a esta situación, su estrategia y argumentación, en un esfuerzo por discernir su intención. Luego de proponer y examinar algunas posibles respuestas provocadas en sus primeros lectores y lectoras, agregamos un breve ejemplo de las respuestas que suscitaron los códigos en el siglo 19 durante los debates sobre la esclavitud en el ámbito religioso norteamericano. Al final preguntamos por la posibilidad de construir respuestas adecuadas a nuestro contexto actual." "The domestic codes reflect the hierarchical structure of the Graeco-Roman household, manifested in asymmetric pairs of relationship between a dominant figure and a subordinate person or persons: husband/wife, father/children, owner/slaves. In an effort to determine the intention of the texts addressed to this situation, an analysis of their rhetoric, with its strategies and techniques of argumentation, is presented, along with a study of possible responses to the codes by their first readers and a brief review of the response evoked in 19th century debates over slavery in the U.S. At the end we consider the possibility of constructing responses that are adequate for our present context."
