Abstract
The three volumes of The Context of Scripture:Canonical Compositions, Monumental Inscriptions, Archival Documents from the Biblical World, edited by William W. Hallo, were published by Brill from 1997 to 2003. Each volume in COS covers Egyptian, Hittite, West Semitic, Akkadian, and Sumerian texts that related to the Bible. Each text has its introduction, update rendering, bibliographies, explanatory notes, and scriptural cross-references. The canonical compositions in volume I focus on the various literature texts. The monumental inscriptions in volume II consist of everything from great building inscriptions and royal annals, which are relatively lengthy, to short seal impressions and inscriptions on bowls, ivories, etc. The archival inscriptions in volume III consist mostly of letters, contracts, court cases, and other legal documents. Volume III also contains two extensive and helpful indexes for the entire work. Assembling this work in a little over a decade was a monumental task, and they deserve much credit for the superior line-up of scholars, the extensive and fine choices of texts, the excellent translations, and the overall presentation of the work. They present the multifaceted world of ancient writing that forms the colorful background to the literature of the Hebrew Bible. They have become standard reference work in college, seminary, and university libraries. They have been proved reliable and indispensable companions for all who engaged in Biblical Studies and Ancient Near East Studies.
