Abstract
This paper examines the problem of historical approach in understanding Islamic law which refers to the basic principles of Ushul Fiqh "Al-Ibrah bi 'Umum al-Lafzi La Bi Khusus Al-Sabab". The author assumes that this rule has pushed Muslim scholars especially in classic and medieval period to understand Al-Quran and Hadith based on textual orientation (bayani) and neglect the historical dimension (Asbab al-Nuzul). Moreover, this rule is more understandable as a theological dogma than as a methodological step in the study of Islamic law. As a result, the author offers the thoughts of Quraish syihab about understanding the historical timing and KH. Sahal Mahfudz’ interpretation of the word la in that term.
