Abstract
"En España, como en otros lugares del mundo occidental, se discute y se legisla desde hace años acerca del mejor modo de afrontar la muerte como corresponde a ese momento tan delicado y fundamental de la vida humana. La actualidad de la cuestión viene dada por diversos motivos. Es posible que el más determinante de ellos se halle en los avances de la medicina, que si, por una parte, han permitido alargar el tiempo de la vida, por otra, ocasionan con frecuencia situaciones complejas en los momentos finales, en las que se ha hecho más difícil distinguir entre lo natural y lo artificial, entre el dolor inevitable y el sufrimiento debido a determinadas intervenciones de las nuevas técnicas médicas. Además, la mayor frecuencia con la que las personas llegan a edades avanzadas, en situaciones de debilidad, ha replanteado también la cuestión del sentido de la vida humana en esas condiciones".
