Abstract
"Este estudo trata de interpretar o texto de Mateus 16:18, o qual narra: “...também eu te digo que tu és Pedro, e sobre esta pedra edificarei a minha igreja, e as portas do inferno não prevalecerão contra ela”. Numa análise superficial, a passagem parece apoiar a teologia católica acerca da edificação da Igreja Cristã sobre Pedro, sendo este o primeiro Papa. No entanto, ao longo do estudo, percebe-se que esta é uma interpretação não exegética do texto. O próprio Pedro, em sua primeira epístola (1Pe 2:4-10), apresenta um comentário da declaração que Cristo lhe fizera. Ele afirma ser Cristo a pedra que vive, sobre o qual os crentes são edificados, tornando-se pedras que vivem, e assim, a Igreja de Cristo é edificada, obtendo a sua vitória. Além disso, existe no Antigo Testamento uma expectativa messiânica ligada à pedra, e no Novo Testamento existem textos que apontam Cristo como sendo a pedra. Logo, o fundamento da Igreja Cristã é “o Cristo, o Filho do Deus vivo” confessado por Pedro em Mateus 16:16" ["This study deals with the interpretation of the text of Matthew 16:18, where is written: "...and I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it." Through a superficial analysis, the biblical passage seems to support the Catholic theology about the edification of the Christian Church upon Peter, who would have being the first Pope. However, through the study of the text, it can be perceived that this is a non-exegetical interpretation of its content. Peter himself, in his first epistle (1Pe 2:4-10), presents a commentary on the statement that Jesus addressed to him. He affirms that Jesus is the living rock, upon which the believers are edified, becoming by their turn living rocks, and it is by this way that the Church of Christ is built and become victorious. Furthermore, there is a Messianic expectation in the Old Testament concerning the rock which is interpreted in the New Testament as referring to Christ. Therefore, the foundation of the Christian Church is "Christ, the Son of the Living God", the One witnessed by Peter in Matthew 16:16"]
