Abstract
This text considers the status of the “beau geste” (“noble gesture”) in organizations, around and beyond the ethical point of view. First we consider the different perspectives already developed in the field of business ethics: the first is linked with the virtue ethics approach, the second one insists on the “physical” character of morality while the third one is attached to the specificities of an aesthetic approach of organizations. In this text, we don’t want to see the beau geste as unassailable, but as a strategy of criticism. This raises several questions. Could it be considered as a way of distorting the general “economy of gifts”? Can we be certain that beau geste ethics in business is only something which has to be “visible”? In conclusion, we examine the applicability of this beau geste ethics in the business world, then we discuss its consequences in terms of responsible leadership.
