"Un libro tal tiene una larga historia. Ya desde principios de los años sesenta había comenzado a trabajar en esta problemática. En ese tiempo trabajaba en el Instituto de Europa Oriental (Osteuropa-Institut) como asistente de investigación. En aquel entonces estaba interesado en analizar el problema de la ideología y la economía en la Unión Soviética, como aparecía en la ortodoxia soviética. Pero no sólo como un problema de reflexión en esa ortodoxia. Más bien, quería analizar cómo era presentada allí la relación entre la solución de problemas económicos y sus interpretaciones ideológicas —ciertamente en términos de Marx, aunque no necesariamente derivado de él—.
