Abstract
The European Group on Ethics of science and new technologies (EGE) has adopted its Opinion number 22 on June 20, 2007. The Opinion indicates the implementing measures (guidelines) to use during the ethics review of FP7 research projects on human embryonic stem cells (hESC), as requested by the President of the European Commission, Mr Barroso, and in line with the adoption of the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for research and development (FP7). The EGE stressed that, as is the case in the European Union, there are divergent views within the Group on the moral legitimacy of research on human embryos and hESCs, ranging from objection to research involving the destruction of human embryos (which makes the full respect of dignity of the human embryo impossible), to a position allowing hESC research under certain conditions or on a broader basis.
