Abstract
"El tema de la relación entre la religión y la ciencia acapara cada vez más la atención de teólogos y científicos de todo el mundo. El presente artículo busca responder a la pregunta “¿Cuál es la posición de la Iglesia católica respecto a dicho tema?”, habida cuenta de los enfrentamientos y malentendidos suscitados en el pasado. Para responder a la misma, se presentan los textos principales de la enseñanza de Juan Pablo II. En ellos se puede encontrar en el Papa una mirada positiva de la ciencia, en cuanto búsqueda de la verdad por parte del hombre, y una advertencia respecto a los límites de la misma, tanto en sus pretensiones como en sus aplicaciones por la tecnología. La ciencia y la religión, aunque autónomas en sus métodos, son complementarias en cuanto son los dos componentes esenciales de toda cultura, y por ello están llamadas a un diálogo responsable –en el cual la teología desempeña un papel destacado– cuyo fin último no es otro que la construcción de una sociedad más humana". ["The relation between science and religion has become during the last years an increasingly debated issue by theologians and scientists throughout the world. The present paper tries to answer the question “What is the Catholic Church´s stance on this matter?”, given the confrontations and misunderstandings of the past. The answer is provided through the presentation of John Paul II’s main teachings. They show that the Pope holds a positive view of science, insofar as it is man´s quest for the truth, but that he also indicates the limits of science, both in its aims and its applications through technology. Science and religion, though autonomous in their methods, are complementary inasmuch as they are the two essential components of any culture and, therefore, they are called to a responsible dialogue –in which theology plays an outstanding role– whose ultimate goal is to build a more human society".]
