Abstract
"En estos momentos soy profesor de la Universidad Javeriana, Xavier University, en Cincinnati, que es una universidad jesuita. Hace treinta años que ofrezco ahí cursos de Teología, sobre todo, cursos de teología interreligiosa, diálogo interreligioso, cursos de diálogo con el budismo, diálogo con el islamismo. Mi interés en esta materia empezó hace mucho tiempo, cuando tenía trece o catorce años, que fue cuando me decidí a entrar al seminario menor de los padres verbitas. Entonces quería ser misionero y convertir todas estas religiones. Pero lo mejor fue que aprendí de otras religiones. Y no solamente de aprender con libros, sobre todo hice amigos budistas y musulmanes. Me di cuenta de que probablemente esas religiones tenían mucho que enseñarme. Tuve la oportunidad, el privilegio, de hacer mis estudios teológicos en el Gregorianum, en Roma, pero, además, empecé mis cursos teológicos en octubre de 1962, dos semanas antes del inicio del Concilio Vaticano II. Esa experiencia de estar en Roma, de conocer obispos verbitas que asistían al Concilio y, sobre todo, de ver cómo la Iglesia Católica había cambiado sus ideas con respecto a otras religiones al hacer la declaración de la actitud de la Iglesia hacia otras religiones, era algo revolucionario en la concepción de la Iglesia. Eso me alentó a continuar mis estudios. Pude estudiar teología de las religiones, primero con Karl Rahner, después con un teólogo protestante alemán. Durante todo este período he podido ver las grandes posibilidades de renovación de la Iglesia, de encontrar posibilidades de desarrollar una teología cristiana más adecuada mediante un diálogo con otras religiones" ["Right now I am professor at Javeriana University, Xavier University in Cincinnati, a Jesuit university.
