Abstract
The alleviation of poverty is a many faceted under taking in which educat ion plays an important role. Where early childhood learning opportunities are available, we see benefits beyond the obvious. This art icle will point out some of these primary, secondary and even tertiary benefits in a community and then point out the challenges to arriving at those. Finally we will look at some current known initiatives. We end with this observat ion by Nobel laureate Amar tya Sen: “ I f you want to build a country, build a school.”
