Abstract
"When the young Augustinian monk Martin Luther succeeded Johann von Staupitz as holder of the Lectura in Biblia in the University of Wittenberg in 1512, probably no one, not even the vicargeneral himself, suspected that the new appointee, promising enough to be sure, was to become one of the most revolutionary figures in the entire history of biblical studies. It is sometimes forgotten that Martin Luther, in addition to being the recognized leader of the Protestant Reformation, was for well over thirty years the most distinguished professor of the university which he, more than any single faculty member, helped put on the European map"
