Abstract
"By the middle of year 2000, Pentecostalism in India has grown to approximately 33.5 million strong, ranking fifth in the world (behind Brazil, the United States, China, and Nigeria) for total numbers in the renewal. Included in this total are 1,253,041 classical Pentecostals; 5,032,741 Charismatics; and 27,234,219 Neocharismatics.1 It is not the purpose of this essay to provide a comprehensive history of Indian Pentecostalism. Rather, it will examine pre-twentieth century examples of Pentecostalism in India, followed by a brief overview of the emergence of the classical Pentecostalism, the Charismatic and the Neocharismatic movements, together with four illustrative case studies illustrative of the several waves of the Indian renewal."
