Abstract
The paper argues for a new focus on moral leadership in business. Drawing on the Confucian vision of leadership, it explores, in the first part, the view that genuine leadership is based on moral principles and the vision of a good life for followers as well as leaders, and it is this that gives it legitimacy. The second part draws on both modern experimental research findings in psychological economics and ancient Confucian insights, to show that business is more deeply rooted in moral background institutions than commonly believed. In the third part, the paper concludes that while moral leadership is grounded in the personal morality of authenticity and the solid structures of corporate ethics, it can only succeed when leaders walk the talk. The article concludes with a case study of a scandal concerning Siemens and attempts by its top management to set the conditions for a fresh start. Keywords: moral leadership, self-interest, authenticity, corporate responsibility.
