Abstract
"Bernard Mandeville é conhecido por uma única obra, e talvez mesmo por uma única frase: ‘Vícios Privados, Benefícios Públicos’, justamente o subtítulo da obra A Fábula das Abelhas. Este artigo tem como objetivo discutir apenas algumas das propostas de Mandeville, expostas numa das várias partes em que se divide A Fábula das Abelhas, a saber: a crítica extremada de Mandeville à educação das classes trabalhadoras de sua época. Foi esse ensaio que primeiro chamou a atenção do público e começou a fazer do médico holandês, transformado em escritor britânico, uma figura mal quista. Trata-se, no final, de tentar relacionar as ideias de Mandeville sobre a educação para os pobres com sua teoria principal sobre o social" ["Bernard Mandeville is known for a single work, and perhaps even a single sentence: 'Private Vices, Public Benefits', just the subtitle of the book The Fable of the Bees. This article aims to discuss one of the ideas proposed by Mandeville, namely the extreme rejection of the working classes free education by Mandeville. It was on the essay about the Charity Schools, one of the parts of The Fable of Bees, that Mandeville put in words his abhorrence against a process occurring in his age, the foundation of schools for the poor working people. This essay caught the public's attention and began to turn the Dutch physician, turned a British writer, into an evil figure. Trying to relate the ideas of Mandeville on education for the poor with his main theory about the social can help to illuminate some aspects of the former"]
