"The history of interpretation of the Aqedah (Gen 22:1-19)2 reveals, as Claus Westermann puts it, "an antithesis, continuing right up to the present, which must be ~onsidered."T~h ere have been two main currents of thought concerning the accentuation and meaning of this OT passage. The religious approach (exemplified in the Talmud and the medieval Rabbis: and in the Church Fathers, Protestant Reformers, and modern critics5) has traditionally stressed the end of the story"
