Abstract
History is full of evidence of people taking up the struggle against all odds in seemingly hopeless situations, doing their utmost for a better future. A number of articles in this issue provide examples of this attitude. Dr Ibrahim Farah points to signs that sustainable peace in Somalia may in fact be within reach. J.L. Kambale Nzweve shows how new efforts are made to overcome hostilities between breeders and farmers in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Shamsia Ramadhan relates initiatives to prevent a repeat of post-election violence in Kenya by educating media people in peace journalism. The challenges facing Mali after the armed insurgency and coup d’état are analysed by Dr Kwesi Aning and Festus Aubyn.
