Abstract
This article is the result of an invitation to an analysis of Latin music to include in a collection of essays about Latino cultures in the United States. I was asked to reflect on some basic questions: Is there a music the Latino population in the United States? If so, what is it and how is it defined by nationality or ethnicity of musicians or consumers? Why musical aesthetic? Why the language? In searching for answers, I found that the nomenclature needed to analyze the music and US Latino communities was so problematic that impossible to build a simple speech. But on the other hand, I realized that offered an interesting perspective and productive in analyzing cultural differences between communities of Latin American origin in the United States. What I did not imagine then was the difficulty posed share work with a Spanish-speaking audience, because three essential terms for discussion -Latino English, Latin American and Latin- are all translated to Spanish with same word: latino"]
